Your Antarctic Essentials: What to Pack for Polar Exploration
While the complimentary gear covers the basics, it’s essential to pack wisely for maximum comfort. Here’s a checklist of must-have items to ensure you’re ready for the journey-of-a-lifetime:
- Long Underwear: Breathable, mid-weight thermals are crucial for warmth without bulk. We recommend packing two sets for layering.
- Expedition Tops and Bottoms: Choose high-performance fabrics that offer insulation and flexibility for activities, to be worn underneath your Parka.
- Lofted “Puffy” Vest: Besides the Parka, a warm insulating liner will be included in your complimentary package which offers additional warmth in both onboard and on-deck settings.
- Waterproof Pants: Lightweight, waterproof and windproof pants are essential. We recommend your waterproof pants have an adjustable waist and cuffs with elastic or snaps that will go over your boots.
- Gloves or Mittens: Insulated, waterproof gloves with removable liners for flexibility in varying conditions.
- Headwear: Pack a neck gaiter or balaclava for added protection against the wind.
Drying Locker / Closet in Your Suite
A heated locker / closet is included in every Suite on the Seabourn Venture. You will be able to hang all our outdoor gear, including your Parka, waterproof pants, gloves, hats, etc. in this drying locker. There is an on/off switch to turn on the heat in the closet, drying your wet or damp outerwear, so you can be ready for the next exciting Zodiac excursion!
Weather Roulette: Expect the Unexpected
Antarctica’s weather is unpredictable, even in summer. While December is warmer, the Continent is known for its sudden weather shifts, with winds and precipitation arriving unexpectedly. Make sure you’re ready for both the beauty and the bite of this remote environment by packing layers and the proper gear.
The right packing list ensures you can fully enjoy every moment of your Antarctic cruise, whether you’re navigating icy waters or spotting wildlife on the deck of the Seabourn Venture.
Layering 101
Dressing for December in Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, and Antarctica
- Buenos Aires: In December, Buenos Aires enjoys warm weather, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Lightweight clothing is ideal, but pack for occasional rain showers.
- Ushuaia: As you move south to Ushuaia, temperatures drop significantly, ranging from 5°C to 12°C (41°F to 54°F). Layering is key, so pack a warm jacket, and waterproof clothing to stay comfortable in changeable conditions.
- Antarctica: Though it’s summer, Antarctica’s temperatures hover between -2°C to 8°C (28°F to 46°F). Wind and precipitation are common, making layering with your Parka and waterproof pants, critical for staying warm and dry while exploring this stunning landscape on-deck or in a Zodiac.
